My Short Game Has Gone. WHY?

“Up until 2 weeks ago I was a fairly decent player off 14. I hit my Driver around 200/210. My long irons are terrible (But my cleveland rescue clubs are helping) and my golf game was always based upon my irons from 150 yards in, my nickname at my golf club is “Radar” due to my ability to ALWAYS hit it close from short distances.

HOWEVER, I have recently started to hit my irons fat and even when I do hit them clean they go left. Not duck hook left but off target by maybe 10 feet.

As this was the only part of my game that was worth anything I am all of a sudden shooting mid 90’s when 2 weeks ago I was shooting mid 80’s.

I have recently started to hit my driver over 250 yards on a fairly consistent basis. Could the two things be related?

Please help……..”

  1. When I had problems like yours I invested in a round with the local pro. He soon sorted out my errors, well worth the money spent.

  2. Good news about your driving, but invest in a couple of lessons. If you could do it before it will be something simple to rectify.

  3. Happened to me recently. Two sessions with my pro and he diagnosed what mess I’d gotten myself into (club laid off on my downswing). Worked on it for a couple weeks and I’m back. Don’t try and figure it out yourself.

  4. Since you’re consistently having the same problem (hitting irons fat & to the left), it’s probably a simple swing flaw that a good instructor could help you overcome.

  5. All things in life work on a sine wave and golf is no different. You can minimize the peaks and valleys in that sine wave by maintaining a fruitful practice regimen. Standing on the practice tee and banging out a hundred tee balls is not a fruitful practice regimen. Practicing the shots that require touch (short game, chipping, putting) is a fruitful practice regimen. When I was able to play I would practice chips and putts to a downhill pin position. If you can master those shots the peaks and valleys in the sine wave will be barely noticeable.

  6. It sounds like 1 of 3 things could be wrong;
    1. You are not in balance thru the swing
    2. Your position at address is off
    3. You are moving over the ball
Either way you need the trained eye of a qualified golf instructor.

  7. Sounds like two things; your grip and swing speed.

You may have a strong grip which could cause you to pull the ball. Try a weaker grip. This will keep you from rolling your wrist through too early.

Fat shots is classic case of trying to swing too hard. If you play with guys that typically hit the ball farther than you, it is natural to try and swing harder. We are guys, it is a guy thing. Take it easy on your iron shots. A nice tempo swing will go just as far if you hit it correctly and you will have less fat shots and mis-hits.

  8. Just as you start to swing the club back, say to yourself …”ALEXANDER CUDOUGEN”… and you should be hitting the ball on the D of CUDOUGEN this will get your timing and rhythm back, try it , it does work

  9. 2 things my friend, rhythm and timing. You are hitting your driver better and I bet you are trying to spank your irons as well. Relax,it happens to us all, just remember the longest distance on a golf course is between your ears. Relax.
