When playing, do you have trouble gauging how far a certain obstacle is, or how far away the green is for your next golf shot? Are you that type of person with an uncanny ability to estimate how far you need to hit your next shot? For most people it’s a guessing game, but it’s so important when it comes to scoring. It can make the difference between a great score or frustration, wanting to break every club in your bag!

Traditionally, it has been part of a professional caddy’s job to truly “know” the golf course, as well as the distance capabilities of every club. It was their job to walk the fairways, marking down every rock, sand traps, trees, water or any other permanent obstacle that you could use to gauge along the fairways to the greens.

Once this was recorded he’d look at the greens, measuring them the old traditional way – pacing off the distance from the front, sides, and back of the greens to the pin. He’d check for the break to the hole, the incline of the green and the safest place to land the ball on approach.

While there are traditionalists who consider technology such as range finders or GPS systems to be some kind of sacrilege to the integral challenge of the game of golf, there are many others who are more interested in perfecting their physical skills, and taking out the guesswork that causes frustration. Why penalize yourself a stroke because of an unseen water hazard or experience the maddening irritation of being in a sand trap if a better calculation can avoid all of these obstacles?

Modern technology is coming to the aid of golfers once again. The latest craze and greatest technological achievement for the outdoor enthusiast or athlete is the hand-held GPS system. By using a hand-held GPS range finder, a golfer now has the ability to cut several strokes off their scores.

By getting a better, more accurate read on distance to the green, the pin, and the precise location of hazards, a golfer can even use the GPS range finder to make better club choices, as the more precise calculations of yardage allows for more precise estimations of what club is needed for the next golf shot at hand.

While many golfers have benefited from the use of laser range finders, and while there is no doubt about their effectiveness in getting results in measurements of distances, more golfers are now discovering that GPS technology can take their game to a whole new level. If you have the physical ability to improve your golf game, it does make a great deal of sense to use this golf aid to help you become more consistent.

All golfers will tell you that confidence is critical. The challenge comes into play when they get to the golf course and really have no idea on how far their golf shots need to travel, or what happens to the golf ball when it lands. Using a range finder it can give you that confidence of being knowing where to place your golf ball on your way to each hole. This is course management, and it’s the difference between winning and losing on the P.G.A. tour. If you have the confidence that you can make a golf shot to a predetermined spot, then it will make a huge difference in your golf scores.

For the more established player who participates in amateur events, a range finder is even a greater purchase for you. These players have the ability to make their golf shots by knowing exact distances or contours of a green. For them, practice is taking place while they are playing. That is an entirely different game plan. In these cases, this is truly designed as a self improvement aid.

Knowing the exact distances they need to send the ball will only assist in making it an even better golf shot. It is a huge advantage in knowing exact distances and pin placements. If you have never played on a particular golf course before, you now have the ability to see where potential trouble is located and make the proper decision.

You already know that you can’t use it in a golf tournament, and so even during your competitive rounds with your friends they are just practice rounds for you. If your membership club allows them during regular play then by all means use the range finder to your benefit.

Today it’s much easier to work all this out, as most of the grunt work can be done using the latest technology. There are many manufacturers that offer top quality golf range finders today, and they all have some great information available. Depending on the manufacturer, each one works a little bit different.

With many of them, you can download any golf course in the United States and Globally, and be able to store this information on any hard drive. Some golf GPS programs are so advanced that they can track multiple targets for a single pin all at once, or even display the precise shape of the green as seen from your current angle of approach.

If you play at different golf courses, having this information is terrific. How can it not help you to know the distances to a hazard or to the green? If you know you can’t get it all the way to the green on this shot, then this golfing aid can help you make the most accurate course management decisions – where to land the ball to put yourself into the best possible position for your next shot, in this case.

A range finder is one of the best training aids available. The challenge is, how do you get the most from it? Go take advantage of it right now to help improve your golf game. You will see the difference in your confidence and improvement in your assessment of each hole. By utilizing the knowledge that you can gain by using this as a training aid, it not only will help you to play better golf, but win more consistently.

Believe it or not, the simple act of a deep breath – when done properly – provides an instant tension release within your body and allows you to achieve the fluid and effortless golf swing of the top tour players. Most golfers know there’s a calming benefit to breathing deeply, and many attempt to do so during stressful situations on the course. The problem is that almost nobody knows how to take a deep breath!

Most people have learned to breathe in a shallow and ineffective way, and can gain significant benefits from practicing what is called “diaphragmatic breathing”. Or just “breathing from your diaphragm”.

First, a quick test to find out your current situation:

While standing, place your right hand on your chest and your left hand on your stomach. Next, take a deep breath and notice which direction each of your hands move.

It’s most common to find that your right hand (the one on your chest) moves upwards, while your left hand (on your stomach) moves inwards towards your spine,
If this happened to you, it means that you are actually taking a shallow “chest breath”, and only using one-third of your potential breathing capacity. This can actually increase tension and stress in your body, especially in the small muscles of the neck and shoulders. The solution – diaphragmatic breathing.

It’s actually quite easy.

Once again, place your right hand on your chest and your left hand on your stomach. Now, as you inhale this time, keep your right (chest) hand still, and allow the air to fill up and expand in your abdomen (left hand moving away from the spine).

It is sometimes helpful to imagine your stomach as a balloon, and as you inhale the air inflates the balloon. Only after the “abdomen balloon” is filled do you allow the chest to expand and fill with air.

Hint: Watch small children, as they have not yet “unlearned” this natural breathing process and can be excellent role models for you.

As you exhale simply allow all tension to release from your body and mind. Although it may take a small bit of conscious effort in the beginning to re-learn this breathing pattern, it is well worth it to have this simple tool at your disposal to instantly alleviate stress and create more freedom in your golf swing.

Think back to a time when you teed off and caught the ball flush on the sweet spot and watched it fly off down the fairway. It’s one of the best feelings in the world! How would you like to be able to do that every time? Long, accurate drives are possible for anyone and the following golf driving tips will help you on your way…

1. Mental Preparation

Never just hit and hope. All the successful golfers have a mental process that they run through before every shot. Many times, when you tee off on the first hole it can set the standard for the rest of your game.

2. Widen Your Stance

Make sure you have a good wide stance. More weight should be on the right (back) leg. The driver is different than iron shots in that you are sweeping the ball up off the tee. Having a wide stance with more weight on your right leg will help you achieve this.

3. Don’t Over Hit It!

When you tee off you want to get the most distance possible. I mean who doesn’t want to hit a 300 yard drive every time? Most amateur golfers go wrong here by trying to hit the ball as hard as they can. Don’t do it! It won’t help you. Instead make sure your right arm stays straight and you maintain a wide arc. This will increase your club head speed and your distance!

These golf driving tips aren’t magic and may seem basic but that’s the key! Get these three things worked into your game to the point where they become part of your subconscious and they will improve your game dramatically. It’s possible for anyone to make super long drives by following these simple golf driving tips. Work these tips into your game and you’ll be driving to the green in no time!

Athletic conditioning is a relatively new idea to many golfers, since caddies and golf carts have always been around to help virtually anyone make it around the course, no matter what shape they were in. Until recently, most golfers didn’t know much about what exercises could be included along side their swing training or putting practice to improve their overall game. But ‘the modern golfer’ is leaner, stronger, and fitter than ever before…

Many golfers, however, seem to remain skeptical. Some might have visions of gyms full of big, intimidating guys they’d rather not train with. Some simply don’t know where to start, or whether all the effort they’d put in would be worth it. It hasn’t helped that several myths have existed for years about the alleged downsides of physical conditioning or strength training, and the impact these might have on the smooth, easy swing most golfers desire. Let’s take a look at 3 of these myths, and the reality hiding behind them as well.

1. If I lift weights, I’ll get too ‘bulky’ and ruin my swing

An exercise program specific to golf and golfers will not hinder your swing mechanics, it will enhance them! There are sport-specific programs for virtually any sport you can think of; the one thing they have in common is their purpose. That is, to strengthen and condition the muscles and muscle groups most used in that game. Makes sense, right?

A typical golf conditioning program will use moderate weight, with medium (12-15) repetitions, it will be relatively brief and it won’t include the massive caloric intake required to build mass. At least, it shouldn’t! Of course, some exercises won’t involve weights at all, they’ll just be…well, exercises. This type of program is designed to improve your strength and endurance while golfing, nothing more. You might burn some calories and end up looking better in a t-shirt, but you will not be building ‘bulky’ muscle.

2. I’d be sacrificing flexibility for strength if I lift weights

In fact, the opposite is true! Untrained muscles are also tight muscles. Through resistance training you’ll increase blood flow, work your limbs through a range of motion that imitates those you’ll use in your golf game, and strengthen your joints’ tendons and ligaments. In conjunction with a stretching program, strength training will improve flexibility, not hinder it.

3. Weight training will cause me to lose the feel in my golf game

Wrong again! By strengthening the muscles specific to playing golf, you will have better control of your body’s motions. A sport-specific program trains your body for better physical performance in your golf game, as mentioned earlier. When you improve functional strength, you have more control and balance, which will improve your feel. Strength training improves body awareness, muscular control, and coordination. These are all key elements for the smooth, flowing golf swing you’re after.

Golf conditioning programs can be incorporated into your training whether you’re in your teens or your 80’s. It is never too late to start. Search out a fitness professional or golf conditioning specialist to design a golf specific program and you will play better than you ever imagined! Start now on your golf conditioning program!

There are good golf tips and bad golf tips. At least, good and bad for any one golfer. The question is, “how do you decide which golf tips to listen to?” Because the answer to the question above is, yes. Sometimes they can!

This question has been brought home to me recently because a good friend took up golf about two years ago. He has really caught the bug and plays several times a week. He also takes lessons and does practice frequently. Whenever we play together, he is constantly asking for tips and advice about his swing.

It is my belief that you should only offer a golf tip if you are sure that it will fit in with the rest of his swing. I have seen far too many players lose their swings when trying to adopt a golf tip which simply does not fit in with everything else that goes on when they swing the club.

There are certain golf tips which are universally sound, like, “keep your head still until it moves naturally with your follow through.” But equally there are plenty of other golf tips that can be ruinous even when given with the best of intentions.

In particular I recall a good player with whom I’d played many rounds who’d always draw the ball right to left, usually with good control. One day when his draw was a bit exaggerated, his partner suggested this perfectly sound golf tip: “You know, if you were to keep your right elbow well tucked in on the downswing you would lose that nasty hook.”

It proved to be one golf tip too many. He became so conscious of his right elbow that it threw the whole of the rest of his swing out of shape and it took him months to get it back again. The point is, it didn’t fit in with the rest of his swing.

This is a mistake that many golfers make. They listen to all the golf tips out there and try to adopt them all, in their desperate search for a good swing. It is my belief that your aim should be to groove with one golf swing that will give you streams of straight and long golf shots by modelling your swing carefully.

Stick with one set of suggestions that work together. Then develop a mental movie of that swing so that you can reproduce it whenever you play a shot.

Think how long some of the most famous partnerships between golfers and their swing coaches have lasted. Think of Jack Nicklaus and Jack Grout, Tiger Woods and Butch Harmon, Nick Faldo and David Leadbetter to name but a few. All these great players relied on one coach’s vision of their swing to keep their mental movie in shape. They did not go asking for golf tips from other players.

Your best bet is to find one complete approach that works for you and then stick with it, honing it as you go, rather than watering it down with other people’s ideas. The mastery will come if you let it!

For golfers who want to play the best golf game possible, the design features of the clubs they choose is an important matter to consider because according to many experts, poor club designs are among the reasons that many golfers aren’t hitting the ball as well as they’d like to. This is the reason the Ping golf club was born.

Karsten Solheim is the Ping golf club’s inventor. The story has it that Karsten was unhappy with his progress as a golfer, and with the way he was hitting the ball. So he began experimenting with his own putter design, hoping he’d be able to putt better than he had been up to that point. He had no idea that his design would eventually be known worldwide!

By 1959, his putter experiments had evolved into his first available design. He came up with his brand name after listening to the sound it made when hitting the ball, hence the name “Ping”. Later the same year, Sports Illustrated published an article in their August issue regarding the Ping putter, dubbing it the “musical” putter.

This was the beginning of success for the Ping golf club. At present, the clubs are manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona by Karsten Manufacturing Corporation. There are more than 400 patents registered for the Ping clubs, and each of their designs are innovative and original, creating clubs that are beneficial to every golfer. Here are some of their key patents and products:

In 1962, the ‘Heel-Toe Weighted‘ Ping club was granted patent. This design revolutionized golf club design and had an influence on many clubs available in the market today.

In 1969, the ‘Perimeter-Weighted, Investment-Cast‘ irons were introduced. The significance of these irons is that the perimeter weighting is able to increase the moment of inertia – the tiny space of time between contact and flight – making the Ping iron more ‘forgiving’ if the club face isn’t quite square to the ball when striking it.

The Cushion Selective Filtering Insert is another piece of patented technology found in Ping clubs. This insert reduces and disperses the unwanted frequencies of vibration that can affect the muscle, bone, and connective tissue in the golfer’s hands, arms and shoulders. Through this invention, the golfer receives less vibration with greater feel on each shot.

These design innovations – and the game-improving results they provide – are the reason for the popularity of Ping clubs. These clubs are widely used because of their ever-changing yet reliable design. Furthermore, the improvements they can make to your game are likely the reason for occasional ‘battles’ between PGA pros who want to use them and those who consider them an unfair advantage!

If you do buy a set, or individual Ping clubs, record the serial numbers. If you ever need one replaced, its serial number can be used to identify the specs used in the manufacture of your club, no matter how many times its design may have been changed since you bought yours. The company can make you a new one to those original specs, so your set will be complete and fully compatible again.

Lower back pain represents one of the most common and costly diagnoses that the health profession manages on a continuous basis. It is one of the most common reasons to visit a physician, physical therapist, or chiropractor. The costs for evaluating and treating patients with low back pain are estimated to be beyond $50 billion dollars a year in the U.S. Physical therapists and other health care practitioners must become more efficient and effective with their treatment plans.

Treatment must be aimed at the individual, rather than the back problem itself. It is crucial for the clinician to examine the person and their ability to function, and not just focus on the traditional clinical tests of impairments such as range of motion and strength tests.

Strengthening, stretching and mobility exercises have been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with low back injury, and may have preventative benefits as well. Multiple studies have examined the benefits of exercise in treating patients with low back pain; however, there have been very few published reports describing specific program designs related to golfers. Golf injuries to the low back are the most common problems in both the professional and amateur player…

It’s poor technique and the repetition of hitting balls that usually leads to an injury. Combine that with the typical sedentary lifestyle (in which people drive to/from work in a seated position and work in a seated position for most of the day) and you begin to understand why there is such a high incidence of back pain among golfers.

Back injury results from stress placed on the spine, usually when the body does not perform the correct sequence during the golf swing. Here is an astonishing fact: Eight times your body weight is forced through your spine as you make contact with the ball. So if you have poor mechanics combined with a weak back you are more likely to cause yourself a significant amount of injury.

To avoid back pain, I recommend you start by visiting a health professional for a golf-specific training and exercise program. A well-trained health professional is able to identify skeletal and muscle imbalances and give you correct golf specific exercises to improve your posture and overall conditioning specific for golf. Correct posture and muscle balance will enable you to get into the proper positions required to swing the golf club smoothly and effectively.

The golf swing is considered a very unnatural movement for most people, especially for people with a sedentary lifestyle. As with most sports, golf is a sport that requires a lot of rotary movement. When we sit for most of the day, certain muscles get used to that position and become “tight”, while other muscles do get “stretched out”. This leads to significant muscle imbalances that then put unnecessary stress on the back. In all likelihood, their ‘golf muscles’ have weakened due to sitting for long periods.

Effectively, the muscles that absorb force and reduce load in a golf swing (that is, the lower and deep abdominals) are relatively weak and aren’t able to work together. And if your hips and shoulders are tight, there is a greater chance of moving incorrectly.

The golfer’s checklist to ensure a healthy back:

1. Visit a physical therapist or chiropractor well versed with golfers for a golf-specific physical assessment and conditioning program.

2. Take a lesson from a PGA professional about basic fundamentals and how the body should move during the golf swing. Hopefully the PGA instructor uses video to analyze your swing.

3. Practice golf specific drills that teach the correct movements in your swing, which will decrease the chances of injuring your back.

4. Ensure your clubs are fitted properly for you, e.g. are your clubs too short or long? Are the shafts too flexible or stiff?

5. Make sure you do a golf-specific warm-up routine prior to hitting balls or playing golf.

Following this advice, and maintaining a good level of activity and movement away from the course, should minimize your lower back problems. Don’t forget that your lower back is greatly impacted by added pounds around the midsection, as that gut pulls the lower back forward and out of balance with the rest of the body. If this is something you need to change, do it!!! Your back will thank you.

For golfers, whether professional or just starting out, the quest for the perfect swing is often a top priority for perfecting their game. While some golfers may have the resources to pay professional trainers to help improve their game, others may look to improve their swing through golf swing trainers such as the Refiner Golf Training Aid.

How a golf swing trainer device works, the diversity of the aids available, the effectiveness of the product, and the reputation of the manufacturer are all things that a golfer looks for when deciding on which golf swing training device to use. This article will look at this one popular piece of golf practice equipment and try to determine if this product can live up to its claims…

The Refiner Golf Training Aid works on a patented hinge principle which claims to make it possible to improve your swing by ‘feel’ instead of swing mechanics. A golfer uses the Refiner Golf Training Aid just as they would a normal golf club throughout the swing, up to the point of connecting with the ball. If anything is wrong in the golfer’s swing, the club will hinge and make it impossible to finish the swing to completion.

It is said that the Refiner Golf Training Aid can detect and improve problems such as excessive grip pressure, an open or closed club face, bad swing plane, and improper lower body movements. Aside from the ability to detect such swing problems, the Refiner Golf Training Aid also comes with a variety of clubs.

Most golfers will realize that in addition to using a driver to hit the ball long distances, they also need to improve their skills in using other types of clubs in order to hit the ball a shorter distance, as for chipping and putting. So, there are 4 types of clubs available for the Refiner Golf Training Aid program, including a driver, a 5 iron, a chipper, and a putter.

The website says that you can purchase these clubs separately depending on your specific needs, or pick from three combinations of clubs for specific goals. The clubs are offered in men’s, women’s, and junior lengths with some, but not all, available with a left hand option. You can also custom-order specific length clubs if needed.

The Refiner Golf Training Aid makes some awesome claims, but testimonials on their website indicate that they have many satisfied customers. The company claims that while there are other hinged golf swing training aids available, the Refiner Golf Training Aid product is superior due to its patented hinge design that can easily be calibrated by the user to suit their own preferences. With the purchase of any Refiner Golf Training Aid product, you will also get a 30 minute instructional video with PGA trainer Rick Bradshaw demonstrating how to use the product.

The Refiner Golf Training Aid has been around since 1992 and is said to have a solid reputation in the golfing industry. Refiner Golf is said to have an excellent warranty on all of their trainers and offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you feel that your golf game does not improve.

As you may now realize, there are many reasons why the Refiner Golf Training Aid is getting a lot of attention throughout the golfing world. With its inexpensive price, variety of clubs, and patented design it may well live up to its claims. While most companies make claims that are hard to believe, reviews of the Refiner Golf products do indicate that while people are not becoming golfing professionals overnight, the Refiner Golf Training Aid products do improve their game.

No doubt countless golfers have tried traditional approaches to golf psychology (positive thinking and affirmations) to lower their golf scores. Some people have had some success with these, some of the time. But for many players, these attempts at happy, positive thoughts have led to frustration and a sense that they were wasting time.

There’s a reason for this – these traditional mental approaches to improving your game often are a complete waste of time! It isn’t that you weren’t using them often enough or doing anything wrong, or that positive thinking exercises and affirmations have no value; it’s just that you’ve been missing a big piece of the puzzle…

You were practicing DENIAL. And a part of you knew it. You were essentially denying the part of you that knew that what you were affirming, such as “I consistently hit 90% of greens in regulation”, simply was not true.

Even as you were repeating your affirmation over and over again, part of you whispered “bull****”. You could call that part of you the “inner critic“. And let’s face it; the inner critic may have a point. After all, it may be a fact that in the past year, you averaged only 30% greens in regulation so you’re setting up an internal conflict between what you tell yourself, and what you know to really be true. And this can set up a mental block that affects your game dramatically.

The inner critic is the voice of all negative emotions on the course – fear, doubt, anger, embarrassment, etc. It can even be an underlying cause of physical symptoms such as tension, sweaty palms, and a variety of aches and pains.

The “Renegade Mindset Techniques for Golf” System deals specifically with recognizing and eliminating the inner critic. RMT is a sports-specific form of Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), the most popular method in the emerging world of Energy Psychology.

Instead of denying its existence, thus allowing it to subtly sabotage our best efforts at improvement, you can focus your attention on it and “clear it” with the simple yet powerful RMT protocols.

Once the negative thought or belief is acknowledged and cleared, a positive affirmation can more effectively take hold in your conscious and subconscious mind. You will have eliminated its competition, and therefore it will be easier to accept.

The RMT for Golf routines always begin with recognition of the negative issue. Then you will focus on that particular issue while “tapping” to eliminate it.

DO NOT be concerned about “being negative“! Remember, it is the acceptance and clearing of the negative that is the key. With the negative feeling/emotion cleared, THEN you can install the positive substitution with ease!

Amateur golfers are generally interested in one thing…how to improve their golf game in a hurry. Exactly how can you accomplish this? The best way is a combination of good training, practice and the right teaching aids.

The market today is just flooded with golf swing teaching aids, some of which help, some of which are more gimmick than instructor. The most important thing you can do before purchasing one of these teaching aids is knowing where your strengths and weaknesses are. Otherwise you could end up shelling out a lot of money each season for new tools to help you improve, but later find that they aren’t helping you with the right things…

Choose the right Golf Swing Teaching Aid…

So how do you choose? Some choose according to what they can afford, while others look for the most popular golf instruction tool. You can easily be sold on the latest and greatest instructional tool with the right TV infomercial, but that doesn’t mean it’s where you should spend your money. Knowing where your game needs the most improvement will make all the difference in whether you waste your money, or drop your handicap.

Asking friends, and others you golf with, is an ideal opportunity to get a third party review of where you need work on your golf game. Recognizing your own flaws can be tough at first, but getting some feedback from others will get you looking in the right direction. If you have ever taken lessons, asking an instructor what golf swing teaching aid could help improve your game’s weaknesses would yield useful information.

If you’re at a pro shop, you should be able to try out the teaching aid prior to purchasing. Give it a try and see if it will actually help correct that part of your game that needs help. Only make your purchasing decision if you’re 100% sure that this teaching aid focuses on something you actually need to improve.

Keep in mind that just about everything to do with golf, including balls, are expensive. So doing your homework up front, and avoiding purchasing numerous training aids that won’t help you improve your game, will be a lot easier on your wallet and your garage that will become full of the unused gimmicks you buy each season.
